La fruta más apestosa del mundo: el Durián (Parte I) La fruta es un alimento que no puede faltar en la dieta de todas las personas del mundo. Todas las frutas tienen nutrientes y vitaminas que necesitamos para nuestra salud y para que las comamos, la naturaleza es sabia y se ha centrado en hacer que estos alimentos tengan un buen aspecto por fuera y por dentro, así nos resultan atractivos y nos los comemos con gusto para poder beneficiarnos de todos sus nutrientes. Pero la naturaleza se olvidó de hacer atractiva a una de todas sus frutas, el durián, la fruta más apestosa del mundo. Si una fruta es apestosa lo último que querremos las personas es comérnosla, ¡ni tan siquiera querremos tenerla cerca nuestra! Un alimento maloliente o con mal aspecto no nos lo podremos comer, porque nuestro instinto nos dirá que es peligroso para nuestra salud y que quizá nos estemos poniendo en peligro. Si has paseado por algún mercado en Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur o Singapur (entre otras ciudades), y has notado un intenso olor a animal muerto (aunque algunos dicen que huele más a excrementos), seguro que has pasado cerca de un puesto de frutas donde vendían el infame durián. En realidad es infame para los incautos turistas que se animan a probarlo, porque en realidad es conocido en todo el sudeste asiático como el rey de las frutas. ¿Cómo es esta fruta tan peculiar? Algunos lo describen como: ‘Es como comerse una crema de vainilla en una letrina, y su olor se puede describir como excremento de cerdo, barniz y cebollas, todo mezclado con un calcetín sudado’. El durián crece en los árboles conocidos como durio y se encuentra presente en todo el sudeste asiático, aunque es una fruta nativa de Indonesia, Malasia y Brunei. Es una fruta fácil de reconocer, no sólo por su intenso olor, sino por su aspecto. De considerable tamaño (hasta 30cm. de largo), tiene forma alargada o redondeada y está cubierto por espinas. De hecho su nombre viene del malayo “duri”, que significa espina. La pulpa del durián es carnosa y de un color entre amarillento y anaranjado, de sabor dulce, aunque de aroma difícil de soportar.

If a fruit is stinky, the last thing people will ever want to do is to eat it, we will not even want to have it near us! We cannot eat smelly or bad-looking food because our instinct will tell us that it is dangerous for our health and might be putting ourselves in danger. If you have wandered around a market in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore (among other cities), and have noticed an intense smell of dead animal (although some say it smells more like excrements), you must have passed near a fruit stand where they sold the dreadful durian. It is actually disgusting for the unwary tourists who are encouraged to try it, as it is actually known throughout Southeast Asia as the King of Fruits. What does this peculiar fruit look like? Some describe it as: 'It's like eating a vanilla icecream in a latrine, and its smell can be described as pork excrement, varnish and onions, all mixed up with a sweaty sock”. The durian grows in trees known as Durio and is present throughout Southeast Asia, although it is a native fruit from Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. It is an easy-to-recognize fruit, not only for it’s intense smell, but for its appearance. It is of considerable size (up to 30cm. long), it has an elongated or rounded shape and it is covered by thorns. In fact it’s name comes from the Malay "Duri", which means “thorn”. The pulp of the durian is fleshy and of a colour between yellowish and orange, of sweet flavour, but of a difficult to bear aroma.
