The Incandescent Lightbulb (1897) The origin of the incandescent lightbulb dates back to the year 1878, when Joseph Wilson Swan obtained the British patent of his invention, even in anticipation of the patent of the recognised Thomas Alba Edison. Swan reported the success of its invention to the Chemical Society of Newcastle, where he showed the operation of the lamp in a meeting made in February of 1879. In that same year he began to make installations of his lamps in houses and signs in England. In the year 1881 he founded his own company, which he named the Swan Electric Light Company, with which he began to produce incandescent lightbulbs in larger quantities. On the other hand, Thomas Alba Edison was also part of the origins of the incandescent lightbulb, in fact, he is considered the inventor (October 21, 1879), as he was the first one to patent a carbon filament lightbulb with longer duration on February 27, 1880 outside of the labs, that is to say, that it was commercially feasible. Previously, attempts were made of models of this type of lightbulb, however, these types of models were left only in laboratory experiments. This is one of the inventions that humanity uses most every day, from its origins to the present day. Based on an analysis made by Life magazine, the incandescent lightbulb is the second most useful invention of the nineteenth century. The activity of the light bulbs commercialization by the Edison’s company, was immersed in continuous battles between the two competing patents.
