Curiosities about Elvis Presley (Part I)
Elvis Aaron Presley was born on January 8th, 1935, 35 minutes after his twin brother: Jesse Garon Presley, who was still born. His parents had no more children, so he ended up being an only child and had a very close relationship with his parents: Vernon and Gladys.
It was they who helped him to discover his passion for music. When he was a child Elvis wanted a bike, but his parents, despite their efforts, did not manage to buy one. In exchange they gave him a guitar with which young Presley discovered his passion.
The quiff boy was also prodigious in the world of sports. In the year 1960 he achieved the Black belt in karate, thanks to his friend and teacher Ed Parker. He always carried the certificate in his wallet until the day he died.
Everyone who met Elvis Presley at the beginning of his career agrees that he was a simple and modest boy, but absolutely concerned about his appearance. With his first few dollars he bought some suits in Lansky's, a small store in Memphis where the owner supplied designer suits made in pink and white specially for him.
Over the years, his taste became more and more eclectic: He was passionate about jewellery, tight leather suits, large belts… Now that he was famous he was able to afford to hire Frank Sinatra's tailor, who was the designer of his cloaked suits, imitating Captain Thunder.
His quiff, perfectly sculpted, was without a doubt one of his most well known features. "I was fascinated by the way he combed his hair in the morning," his friend, the musician Jimmie Rodgers Snow, would remember.
"He used three different oils for his hair. At the front, a very strong wax for the quiff, a type of oil for the top and vaseline behind. He said it was the only way the hair would stay in place during his performances".
