Historical Curiosities of Toilet Paper (Part II) 5. In 1880 the brothers Edward and Clarence Scott begin to market the rolled-up paper we know today. At this time there were many society taboos preventing the launch of this product. For one, it was considered immoral and pernicious to sell paper in the shops in the eyes of the general public. 6. But the original toilet paper was nothing like the soft and absorbent product of today. In 1935 an improved toilet paper is designed and claimed as being "splinter-free paper". It therefore appeared that the original design contained certain impurities. 7. The importance of toilet paper nowadays is unquestionable, witness to this is the recognition received by Kimberly-Clark in 1944 by the United States Government. The reason for this recognition was (we quote textual words): "His heroic effort in supplying the soldiers during World War II". 8. Its importance became strategic in the “Desert Storm Operation” in the Gulf War. The colour green of the American tanks contrasted too much with the white sands of the desert and therefore there was not enough time to paint the vehicles. It was then decided to wrap the tanks in toilet paper as a last minute camouflage technique.
